How to Network With Major Companies in Just Two Hours:

Bloomberg. KPMG. Deloitte. PWC.

Although these companies may seem intimidating at first, don’t worry! By attending The Villanova McBA’s 4th Annual Career Conference November 17th (Monday), I realized that there are plenty of opportunities to network with representatives of the listed companies and more. The professional development event was sponsored by the Villanova Multicultural Business Association and took place at the East and West Lounges of Dougherty Hall from 5:00-7 PM. The overall purpose of the event was to simply expand people’s networking circles and help them professionally improve their social skills. The event was very organized and controlled. The crowd was relatively small, but this provided a better opportunity for us to network with the company representatives. There was also a guest speaker, Arianne Gasser, who is an Expert in Strategic Communication at CRA, Inc. Ms. Gasser discussed the importance of delivering effective presentations, maintaining close relationships with others, and discovering your personal and professional goals in life.

Ms. Gasser was such an effective speaker overall. She really influenced how I viewed my aspirations for the future, and made me re-evaluate where I am right now and where I want to be five or ten years from now. She also informed us of basic “Do’s” and “Don’ts” when entering the professional world. Following the guest speaker, there was a short intermission and then a networking convention with company representatives. What really appealed to me was that McBA also included four tables that featured:

  1. Resume Review
  2. Craft Your Elevator Pitch
  3. Effective Corporate Presentations
  4. Strategic Meeting Preparation

The first table focused on helping people strengthen the quality of their resumes. The second coached people on how to prepare a simple, brief description of who they are and what they want to do academically and professionally. The third centered on the basics of good presentation skills. Finally, the last table focused on how to effectively, efficiently and strategically prepare yourself for meetings.

I really want to encourage everyone to attend McBA’s 5th Annual Career Conference next year! Do it to be proactive with your life! Take initiative! The event offers such a wonderful experience for everyone and there really is no disadvantage in going. The biggest advantage is being able to network with major companies in just TWO HOURS. I thoroughly enjoyed it and received a lot of valuable advice about how to better myself as an aspiring individual. The best part about McBA is that it’s multicultural and OPEN TO ALL MAJORS. ALL ARE WELCOME. If you’re interested, you can definitely follow this blog for future recaps of events and/or information about the association.McBA 2014 Career Conference Flyer
